Philips Lumea Features

Here are some of the main features of the Philips Lumea range.  Some may apply to specific models only, we have noted the models for you where required.

IPL Technology

Lumea IPL review text

The Philips Lumea uses enhanced light-based technology known as IPL.  Philips have adapted salon-based IPL technology for safe and effective use in your own home.

4cm2 Treatment Area

Philips Lumea review treatment window image

The Philips Lumea has a 4cm2 Treatment window which is great for larger areas such as the legs.  This combined with Philips Slide and Flash Mode means that you can treat your lower legs in as little as 8 mins.

Facial Attachment

Philips Lumea review facial attachmentPhilips Lumea models sc2006/11, sc2007/00, sc2008/11 and the latest sc2009/00 all contain a 2 cm2 facial attachment specifically made for use on the face or other sensitive areas.  This attachment contains a specialized filter to protect the facial area.  It also has a smaller surface area which is perfect for treating small areas such as the upper lip.

Special Bikini Attachment

Philips Lumea Bikini attachmentPhilips Lumea introduced this additional 2cm2 attachment in their sc2008/11 Lumea. It is also included in the sc2009/00 model.  The Bikini attachment was specifically designed for use on thicker hair found in the bikini area.

If you don’t want to splash out on the latest Lumea models then you can use the Facial attachment to treat your bikini area.

Cordless Design

Philips Lumea Cordless Design
The Philips Lumea is cordless for convenience.  There are some exceptions to this, for example the Philips Lumea Comfort Model which does contain an extra long cord.

The Cordless design means you can treat the areas you want, when you want and where you want.  Just make sure that your Lumea is fully charged before each use.  A full charge usually takes about 100 minutes and lasts a minimum of 370 flashes.

No replacement parts or gels

Philips Lumea review no replacement parts

Unlike some other IPL devices, the Philips Lumea does not require any replacement lamps or gels. The Philips Lumea contains a finite number of flashes, once they are gone, they are gone and you will need a new device.

Philips Lumea models contain a huge number of flashes, particularly compared to other similar IPL devices. Philips Lumea sc2006/11 and sc2008/11 models both have 140,000 flashes.  The Lumea sc2005/00, sc2007/00 and sc2009/00 each have a staggering 250,000 flashes.

Adjustable Light Energy Settings

Philips Lumea has 5 adjustable light energy settings to ensure gentle but effective treatment. This gives you greater control over your treatment.  You can choose a low setting for sensitive areas such as the face and underarm.  We recommend when using a higher setting that you build up gradually by testing small areas on a lower setting at first.

You should always read the product documentation that accompanies the device first and consult the skin matrix to ensure the Philips Lumea is suitable for your skin type. Philips recommend you patch test the area 24 hours before you begin treatment.

Philips Lumea IPL – How does it work?

IPL or Intense Pulsed Light used in the Philips Lumea is an enhanced light-based technology that emits a broader spectrum of light than standard Laser treatments.  This means it can be used on a wider range of skin tones and hair colours.  IPL is an effective treatment for permanent hair reduction and is widely available in professional salons.

Philips Lumea Review legs

Philips Lumea applies gentle pulses of light directly to the hair follicle.  This light is absorbed by the melanin or pigment in the hair which produces heat which damages the hair follicle.  This causes the hair follicle to enter a resting phase and future growth is inhibited.

Philips Lumea Review: How it Works

The hair will shed naturally within 1-2 weeks.  Use the Philips Lumea to treat the area every 2-4 weeks to prevent the hair follicle becoming active again and new hairs growing.IPL is only effective when hair is in its active phase of growth, this is called the Anagen Stage.  Not all hairs are in this stage at any one time,  this means that regular use is required to achieve permanent hair reduction.

Philips Lumea Prestige IPL

Will Philips Lumea work for me?

Philips Lumea IPL system works best on those with dark hair and fair skin.  This ensures that the light is fully absorbed by the hair follicle and not the surrounding tissue which can cause damage to the skin.

The Philips Lumea should not be used on White, Grey or Red hair.

If you are blonde or have fair hair the Philips Lumea is unlikely to be effective as there is a lack of pigment in the hair to absorb the light.

Philips Lumea Suitability

Those with darker skin tones should also exercise extreme caution.  The higher concentration of melanin in the skin will attract and absorb the light intended to target the hairs which can also lead to skin damage.

Anyone considering using the Philips Lumea should consult both charts I have included on this page to check their suitability. We also recommend reading the information booklets that will accompany the device.

Philips Lumea Results – What can I expect?

Philips recommend fortnightly treatments.  You can expect optimal results after 4 or 5 fortnightly treatments (roughly 8-10 weeks).

Maintenance treatments will be required at longer intervals as your treatments progress. The length of time between the maintenance treatments will depend on your own hair growth.  Some people find they need to use every two weeks to maintain the hair free feeling, whilst others can leave it for 4-5 weeks.

Here’s the results of Philips clinical trials using the Philips Lumea:

Philips Lumea Clinical Trials results
How long will it take?

The Philips Lumea is extremely quick to use thanks to its large 4cm2 treatment window and two treatment modes.

The Slide and Flash Mode is excellent for treating legs, just slide the device down your legs flashing as you go.   A full leg can be treated in 15 mins.

The Stamp and Flash mode is ideal for curvy areas such as the Bikini or Underarm.

Which Philips Lumea is right for me?

When deciding which Philips Lumea is right for you, this will really depend on what areas you are looking to treat.

Body

If you are looking to treat the leg area only then you don’t need any of the additional face or bikini attachments provided in the new Precision Plus models such as the Philips Lumea 2006/11, 2007/00, 2008/11, or 2009/00 models.

The Philips Lumea 2005/00 might be a better option for you, it contains the same IPL technology used in later models but at a cheaper price.  You also don’t need to sacrifice on the number of flashes as the 2005/00 models contains the same 250,000 flashes to match any of the later models.

Philips Lumea Review Body

Face/Bikini/Underarm Only

If you are looking to treat a small area then you should consider the Philips Lumea 2006/11.  This model contains the 2cm2 facial attachment which is perfect for treating smaller areas and is much more competitively priced than later models.

The technology is just as effective, but you do have fewer flashes.  The Philips Lumea 2006/11 contains 140,000 flashes in comparison to the 250,000 flashes of its nearest competitor the Philips Lumea 2007/00.

Philips Lumea 2005

All over

If you want to completely de-fuzz then the Philips Lumea 2007/00 provides good value.  It has both the 2cm2 facial attachment, for use on both the face and bikini, and 250,000 flashes per unit.

Don’t be fooled into buying the Philips Lumea 2008/11 which has two separate attachments, this machine only has 140,000 flashes.

If you want both the facial attachment and bikini attachment together with 250,000 flashes then the Philips Lumea sc2009/00 is the choice for you.

The Philips Lumea sc2006/11 is the perfect choice if you are looking to treat smaller areas as it contains the 2cm2 precision attachment.  This model has 140,000 flashes, compared to other models which have 250,000 flashes so overall this device does have a shorter potential lifespan.

If you are considering this model Click Here to compare the price against the sc2007/00 which also has the benefit of the precision attachment but comes with 250,000 flashes.  There is often little in the price so it can be worth going for the sc2007/00 instead.

Philips Lumea Hints and Tips

  • Apply the treatment before you go to bed at night. Any slight skin irritation that may occur will fade overnight.
  • If you experience skin redness or itching – after use – which is normal and harmless, you can reduce the redness or itching by cooling the skin with some ice or with a towel soaked in cold water or a cooling pack.
  • The hair roots absorb the pulses of light more effectively when the skin is cool, so allow time after taking a sauna or bath before you start the treatment.
  • When treating skin on your shinbone, try pulling your skin gently away from the bony part of your leg or hold the device in a vertical position when applying.
  • If possible, start the treatment in winter or spring. By starting in winter or spring, you can enjoy smooth skin from the start of summer.
  • Stretched skin enables proper skin contact and releases the flash more easily. For instance, to reach optimal results on your underarms, stretch the skin by raising your arm and placing your hand behind your neck.
